Spanish tapas: Prune and bacon rolls

Tapas have become popular around the globe over the last several years and are usually described as “small plates”. They are much more than little nibbles though. They are a huge part of Spanish culture and they aren’t always small.

If you’ve visited Spain you know they eat late – I mean REALLY late. Dinner is often not eaten until 9 or 10pm which can mean you need a snack to hold you over. That would be where tapas come in. But these delicious snacks are much more than a way to avoid getting hangry.

Tapas are a cultural cornerstone in Spain. This is the time to catch up with friends and family. I can still remember being in Barcelona sitting in a neighborhood tapas bar with the energy buzzing in the air. You could see the people getting together after a long day – a big smile, a big hug, and a little gesture to the barkeep to get their normal drink. It really is a magical experience.

And if you want to bring a little taste of Spain to your own home it is so easy (and tasty). Our favorite is hojaldres de ciruelas y bacon (prune and bacon rolls). But these are just the start!

Finish the spread with some other classics like patatas bravas, tortilla de cebolla  (onion omelette), olives, cheeses, cured ham, croquettes, and pan con tomate. The list is nearly endless

Description

An easy tapas recipe to snack on until that late-night meal. Crispy puff pastry wrapped around bacon and prunes for a sweet and savory snack that pairs perfectly with a glass of red wine.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 78oz frozen puff pastry, thawed as directed on package
  • 12 dried prunes
  • 6 slices of bacon
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Prep a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  3. Roll out the puff pastry and cut into 12 even pieces. Rectangles or triangles work best.
  4. Cut each slice of bacon in half and set aside.
  5. Take one piece of puff pastry and top it with a half slice of bacon and one prune. Roll this all up into a tight roll and seal the edge with a little water. Continue this process to finish the rest of the rolls.
  6. Place the rolls on your prepared baking sheet. Gently brush each roll with the beaten egg.
  7. Bake the rolls 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Remove and let cool on a wire rack. You can enjoy them still warm or let them cool to room temp.

Notes

These are great as part of a tapas spread or just on their own as an appetizer.
