How to be safe when eating abroad

One of my favorite parts of traveling is trying new foods and restaurants – it can be one of the best ways to experience a place or culture. This can occasionally lead to something known as Traveler’s Tummy . . . as a friend of mine learned after a trip to Fiji where they enjoyed an authentic Kava Ceremony!

First, this uncomfortable situation can occur even if you are in a familiar destination and eat only what you are familiar with. The causes range from dehydration related to flying, change in climate, to a lack of sleep. Of course one of the most common causes is bacteria usually picked up in a new destination. However, there are some easy steps to avoiding issues and fully enjoying the culinary delights on any trip!

  • Stay hydrated! Pick water and juices in flight and if you do end up with some stomach discomfort keep taking in those fluids.
  • Watch your alcohol intake. Alcohol can often make your stomach less able to handle unfamiliar foods, lead to dehydration, and can lead some people to be more liberal with their food choices.
  • Wash your hands before you eat. This one is a given anywhere you are.
  • Wash fresh fruits and vegetables and if in a high-risk destination only eat these peeled and cooked.
  • Come prepared. No matter how diligent you think you are being with your food choices you may get sick anyway. Pack chewable pepto, antacids, mint gum, ginger drops or whatever remedies work for you.
  • Know your limits and allergies. A far off destination is not the place to test that possible intolerance.

Don’t let a fear of new foods keep you from experiencing a culture and destination to the fullest extent. With a little preparation and knowledge, you have nothing to fear!
