Sometimes called the Heart of America, Chicago was always the Big City for this girl growing up in central Illinois. It is a city full of history, grit, entertainment, and of course great food.
In fact, the food is really what keeps me going back time and time again. So, I’ve compiled the top 10 places to eat so you can get a taste of Chicago’s culinary history as well as its contemporary food scene.
In no particular order (because it really depends on what you’re in the mood for):
This humble hot dog stand opened in 1948 and has grown and been updated over time, but has remained under the ownership of the same family the whole time. A true rarity in the restaurant world. The two hot dog characters atop the building might be some of the most photographed things in Chicago, but don’t miss the real show inside the hot dog lounger boxes. These weiners are spicier than your average dog and come with a pickled green tomato unique to Superdawg. Just don’t ask for ketchup on your hot dog.
Stephanie Izard was the first woman to win the Top Chef competition and once you eat here you will see why. The menu is often changing with the seasons and as the crew tries new things, but there are some unforgettable dishes that have become mainstays. Check out the goat empanadas with miso-blue cheese aioli for starters. And if you can’t get into this sit-down version give the Little Goat Diner a try. Can we all just agree how adorable their logo/mascot is?!?
In a city known for deep dish pizza this might just be the best, but let’s not start that argument. I think we can all agree that the serve up a mean version of the Chicago classic. What makes them so different is their beautifully caramelized crust and the personal pies are pretty darn cute too.
The pie here is undeniably good, but you shouldn’t overlook the biscuits and pot pies. Their flaky buttery biscuits are turned into delectable sandwiches such as the avocado version with pickled fresnos, smoked feta, mole powder, and a sprinkle of cilantro. And of course, you can’t leave without a slice of pie. You can’t go wrong with any of their sweet offerings, but I’m partial to the mocha pie myself.
This is a favorite for locals and visitors alike so be prepared to wait in line, but if you love breakfast it will be well worth it. Their menu is split between savory and sweet and so are my recommendations. The menu does change seasonally, but if it is on the menu the white chocolate and caramel pretzel pancakes are amazing. If you prefer something on the savory side I highly recommend the BLT eggs benedict. Either way you won’t leave hungry.
The aesthetic in this place is so much fun. Think old school cafeteria full of retro colors, but punched up with fun lit up signs and killer food. The menu is constantly changing with the seasons so you can be sure it is fresh. The baked mac & cheese is always a winner and the cookies are almost too cute to eat.
I grew up eating Italian beef and it seems like everyone in the state has their own version. Al’s might be the best. Thinly sliced seasoned beef stuffed into a soft roll sounds pretty basic, but believe me it is anything but that. You need to top it with giardiniera for the full effect. I never need the side dishes and can barely finish a full sandwich so be prepared to leave with a full belly. What you will need though is a pie of napkins.
Chicago might be the city of deep dish, but Spacca serves up some of the best overall pizza in the city. And it isn’t deep dish. One of only a few Neapolitan places in Chicago certified by the AVPN this casual joint is the perfect spot for lunch or dinner when you just want to relax with friends.
Even if you aren’t vegan you will enjoy this local favorite. With burgers, tacos, and salads on the menu, there is something for everyone. The Titanic BLT burger is better than many beef burgers and the yucca chips are addictive.
This unassuming little spot is a favorite for its locally sourced menu and great atmosphere. If you love breakfast you will adore this place. I highly recommend the Royale breakfast sandwich. This menu favorite has constantly changing ingredients, but it never disappoints.
And think, this list doesn’t even include all the great coffee and cocktail spots. We’ll save those for another day.
I definitely don’t miss Minnesota this time of year, but I do miss…
January 30, 2020Nashville may be known as Music City USA, but the food is giving the tunes…
