Blarney Stones: Irish Cheddar Soda Scones

It might seem like the month of March is the only time you hear about the food of the Emerald Isle, but you should really be celebrating it year-round. Of course, setting aside our misconceptions about the food of Ireland will help with that.

It is true that traditional Irish food is heavy on the meat and potatoes, but this delicious cuisine isn’t all potatoes and dark beer. Fresh produce, great bread, and world-renowned dairy are stars of the Irish kitchen as well. While honoring the traditional dishes there has been a resurgence in Irish cuisine with a focus on farm-to-table, highlighting the bounty of what the isle has to offer.

For a land lacking in wheat fields I have always been surprised at how good their bread is and how many people still bake bread weekly in their own homes. It might help that their most famous bread is so easy to make. Irish Soda Bread is ubiquitous around St. Patrick’s Day in the US. First, you don’t need to buy it at the store. I promise you can make it yourself. And second, you should be making it year-round.

One of our favorite ways to make soda bread is as these bumpy cheddar cheese scones that we lovingly call Blarney stones. Easy, tasty, and perfect by itself or as a side to a hearty Irish dish.

  • Black pudding or white pudding
  • Bacon
  • Eggs
