Like everything else in 2020, fall looks a little different this year. But as the seasons start changing some things thankfully stay the same. The trees start changing, ovens get turned back on, and we are looking for something cozy and warming to do. These fall travel experiences are sure to get you in the autumn mind frame.
So whether you are heading out for a long weekend (mask and sanitizer in tow) or snuggling in at home and just looking to bring a little taste of place to your table – we’ve got you covered.
It doesn’t really get any more classic autumn than a foliage trip through the Adirondacks. This is also a great place for relaxation and social distancing. Take in the gorgeous views with a foliage drive or a hike. One of our other favorite fall activities is apple picking and this region is the perfect spot for it. Grab some apples, some cider, and bring along all the other fixing for a great fall picnic.
Lake Placid is one of our favorite spots to stay and explore the region from. Grab BBQ and brews at Great Adirondack Brewing Company, wander through the antique and artisan shops, and head to the top of the Olympic ski jump for breathtaking views. At to make sure you really leave rejuvenated stay at a lakefront cottage at Placid Bay Inn or settle in at Mirror Lake Inn and treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience.
If a trip to the mountains isn’t on the agenda you can still get the experience with live webcams to watch the foliage change. Make a delicious apple crisp and warm up some cider for the full autumn in New York experience.
If you love the Halloween season Savannah is a must-visit. Once the heat of summer dissipates this Southern city leans into its haunted history and outdoor beauty. Wander through the shaded park squares, grab some local bites for a relaxing picnic, and then head a little just outside the heart of the city to the Moon River District.
Stay in the Historic Landmark District to walk to sites, shops, and get a feel for the story of this beautiful city. To get an even more complete picture of the area’s history head to Pin Point Heritage Museum to experience the Gullah/Geechee culture for yourself. Before heading home stop by The Salt Table for some local goodies to bring the flavors of Savannah home with you.
Bring the flavor of the south to your own table with classic shrimp and grits, Georgia peach cobbler, and Basil Lemonade from Azalea Inn.
Boston is one of our favorite cities because there really is something for everyone. If you love being outdoors, immersing yourself in history, or just relaxing with good eats and drinks – this city has it all.
Spend a day walking the 2.5 mile Freedom Trail with stops along the way at sites, shops, and just taking in your beautiful surroundings. Grab lunch at one of the stalls at Faneuil Hall Marketplace and head to one of the many local parks for some low key alfresco dining. While in town don’t forget to stop by the country’s oldest restaurant, the Union Oyster House, for a bite to-go.
If a trip to the east coast isn’t in the cards for this year you can always whip up some codfish cakes, some soft Parker House rolls, pour a lager, and check out one of the many virtual tours offered for the city’s iconic spots. You will be all set for your Boston fall vacation next year!
If you love the outdoors in autumn this Northwest spot is the perfect option. There are a nearly endless number of hikes near the city so you can find one (or many) that work for your fitness level. Bring your camera to capture these gorgeous views.
After all that activity you are going to need a little relaxation and of course some great food. Feast Oregon typically occurs in September each year, but this year you will have to make your own way around the city of Portland to get a little taste of this Northwest gem. That isn’t a hard task. Head to Maurice to grab lunch to-go and don’t forget a sweet treat to balance out the meal. Share one of the prettiest (and tastiest) pizzas around with a friend when you head to Lovely’s Fifty Fifty.
And don’t forget to head to the Tualatin Valley just outside the city for 40 wineries where you can sip a variety of wines, chat with vintners, and enjoy the wide open spaces.
When you can’t get to Portland take your tastebuds there with some charcuterie from Olympic Provisions, an Oregon wine, and if you can find them grab some marionberries for the perfect Marionberry Pie
COVID has messed up a lot of travel plans, but one thing I’m excited to see make a mainstream comeback – the great American road trip. There isn’t a more beautiful spot for a driving journey than California Highway 1. And if you drive between San Francisco and Los Angeles you can take in not only the gorgeous views, but some amazing food.
Grab a bite of comfort food at Dad’s Luncheonette in Half Moon Bay. Make your way to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk for lunch at The Picnic Basket and a scoop of handmade ice cream at The Penny Ice Creamery. Another must on your dining agenda is the Santa Barbara Shellfish Company which has been putting out some of the freshest seafood dishes for over 30 years.
Given the current wildfires it is best to plan your route and call ahead to verify everything is open.
Even if you can’t recreate the sea air you can bring some of the flavor to yoru own abode with homemade fish tacos, a local CA wine, and order some goodies from Mr. Holmes Bakehouse to really bring it home.
